“Current State” – exhibition of photographs by Students of Łódź Film School’s Department of Photography

Curator’s Statement

“Current State” is an exhibition showcasing the latest visual interpretations by artists on the reality that envelops us. As both a curator and a teacher, I find myself deeply engaged with these perspectives. While this world is one I witness through my own eyes, it’s often one that goes unnoticed. Viewing these pieces, I am consistently moved, even astounded, by the sensitivity of the students. This world is also mine, yet I recognise that my vision of it differs, and they will ultimately shape it in their own ways.

The works display a raw freshness, spontaneity, bravery, and a diverse range of subjects. While there are overarching themes within the exhibition, each artist approaches these with distinct methods, techniques, constructions, and expressive tools.

Once more, we are invited to see the world through the eyes and lenses of young, sensitive individuals.

prof. Tomasz Komorowski

About the Exhibition

“Our eyes—sharp and ever watchful— are everywhere. They meticulously traverse the maps of everyday life and navigate through deep valleys, descending ever deeper to the core. They scrutinize the silence of mundane plains,  extracting from them the essence of pure knowledge. They climb higher and higher, step by step, to the towering peaks, from which they see everything and nothing.

Each of us possesses an eye: round, slightly convex, and glass-like. We are endearingly naive cyclops, searching for answers where only more questions arise from the damp earth. Yet, we persist in our quest for them. We explore realms touched by the divine, tracing the steps of stigmatics and prophets, heeding their silent cries.

We dream of the impossible and perilous, obscuring the bright halos of unexperienced adventures. We dive into the sticky phantoms of painted shapes on photographic film. We blend our gaze with those who came before us, seeking points of connection on the retina of knowledge, intertwining them into a mesmerising unity. We probe the depths of our being, dissecting our minds, hearts, and bodies down to their fundamental elements.

We search for what was recently near us, now loudly proclaiming its absence. We trace the routes of our ancestors, soaring high above misty hills as mountain winds blend past and present in our thoughts. We chase the carefree laughter of a child, soaking our weary feet in the carpet of the morning dew, resting our heads at journey’s end against the heated back of a panting horse. We watch sweating bodies exude primal strength, each strike vying for the focus of our monochromatic stare.

Our eyelids, tightly stretched, never shut. We remain alert. We are prepared to indelibly capture the fleeting images that burst into the limelight of our awareness, seen through the window of a speeding train, on a path worn by millions of feet leading nowhere, and most profoundly… within ourselves.”
