The end of the Road, documentary, 27 mins
In the heart of Upper Silesia, on a tiny street where everyone’s your neighbor, life revolves around the familiar. The unique housing, called “familoki,” reflects the closeness of the community. Here, neighbours know that Norbert will have his tooth pulled out even before it starts to ache.
This tight-knit world, built on generations of miners, runs on the rhythm of shift work. But now, a cloud of unemployment hangs heavy. Their traditions, deeply ingrained in their souls, resist change. However, progress marches on. The construction of a high-speed highway, the Drogowa Trasa Średnicowa, slices through their street, Piekarska. By March, even the last house succumbs to the demolition crew. The unique spirit of this place, where ordinary lives became extraordinary, vanishes. The memories of these families, once bound by a shared experience, now reside in a new housing estate, and this film serves as the echo of their vanished world.
