Night of Culture 2023: Must-see
Night of Culture is just around the corner (3/4 June). There are plenty of attractions waiting for the Festival attendees. It’s impossible to see everything because the event lasts only one night. It’s worth preparing and planning your walk accordingly. Here are events we recommend to add to your lists.
|Among the must-see highlights is The Rap Stage, where accomplished artists like AVI, Alyona Alyona, and Fukaj will share the spotlight with the winners of the ‘Young Rappers!’ competition. The Festival also offers a multitude of captivating art installations that are guaranteed to leave a lasting impression. For instance, at Po Farze Square, you can marvel at towering wicker arches inspired by the historic parish church, while on Szambelańska Street, you can stroll along a carpet made of 520m2 of living grass. Classical music enthusiasts are warmly welcomed to Żmigród Street, where a concert boasting a staggering lineup of 205 artists on stage will take place, explains Aleksandra Stefanek, the media representative for Night of Culture.

19.00–2.00 | Nature in po Farze square
Prepare to be surprised by the transformation of po Farze Square (formerly known as Parish Church Square). The interior of the church will be covered with 520 square meters of live grass and a tree will stand in the nave. Skilled braiders will also recreate parts of the old building’s arches, reinterpreting the outlined foundations. Additionally, a light installation called “Bee,” made of metal and fabric, will radiate a warm glow from its interior at night. Meanwhile, “Wisteria” will drape from the balcony of the tenement house at Grodzka 7. This flower, often associated with Eastern cultures, is a symbol of happiness, vitality, new beginnings, including welcoming someone to a new city or home, and expressing emotions to someone special.
22.00–2.00 | The Ark – video mapping by Kiyoko Ishii and Toshikazu Toyama | The Palace of the Czartoryski Family – Litewski Square
A colourful and inspiring tale about living life to the fullest. Japanese visual artists breathe life into the walls of the Palace of the Czartoryski Family, taking us on an imaginative and magical journey filled with natural wonders.
19.00–2.00 | Night at the Brewery: installations, films, tours | Perła – Lublin Breweries, S.A, Bernardyńska 15
Night at the Brewery consists of various art installations, including Bernard Kiedrowski’s Garden Point – a unique spatial puzzle and Bottle Green, an installation created by students of floristry at SPPSS (Post-secondary School of Social Service Employees) under the guidance of Paweł Adamiec. It’s a lush oasis nestled within the historic architecture of Perła Brewery. The programme also includes screenings of the films “The Snails” and “By the river”, directed by students of The Wajda School – Grzegorz Szczepaniak and Magda Kowalczyk, as well as tours of the historic Brewhouse and the Underground (registration required).

Night of Culture’s rap stage will kick off with performances by the winners of the “Young Rappers!” competition held at Workshops of Culture. Additionally, we will have the opportunity to hear young, yet experienced rappers, namely Fukaj, Alyona Alyona, and Avi. The concert will be accompanied by artistic installations as scenery. “Heart” by Lumina Park, which, filled with positive emotions allows us to share good energy, and “Fanatom” – Paweł Adamiec’s sensory installation, made from upcycled materials depicting a creature with a “complex inner world”.
19.00–00.00 | The Classical Stage – concert | Żmigród 10 – football pitch behind A & J Vetter Economic Schools of Lublin
The Classical Stage will feature fantastic musicians, including well-known personalities from the Lublin music scene and the best students and teachers from music schools in the region. The evening will be capped off with a farewell waltz performed by Stowarzyszenie Wschód Kultury and the Choir of Lublin University of Technology.
19.00–00.00 | Dancing in the Air – Aerial Shows by Strefa Wysokich Lotów | Litewski Square
We’ll see a unique aerial adaptation of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” that promises to add a touch of humor to the classic tale. This performance will be presented by advanced performers. The second show, “Show Me How You Burlesque,” is a one-of-a-kind spectacle inspired by the hit musical “Burlesque”. The talented team at Strefa Wysokich Lotów will take the stage with a total of 17 performers. Additionally, there will be approximately 55 solo performances by both children and adults of different ages.
19.00–2.00 | Flowers of Evil – Jarosław Koziara’s installation | Złota 5 – yard
Plants, particularly flowers, are often linked with graceful beauty, sweet aroma, and tenderness. However, this is not always the case. Some plants are sinister and carnivorous, causing unease. Watch out in this yard and don’t get eaten!
19.00–2.00 | Przywale | Szambelańska
During Night of Culture, Szambelańska Street, previously known as Przywale, will be transformed into a nature lover’s paradise. The entire pavement will be adorned with vibrant live grass. Suspended above the heads of the public, a magnificent art installation called “The Garden of Curiosities” will captivate onlookers. Additionally, an artistic display titled “Fly Agaric,” portraying a toxic representative of the third kingdom in an impressive XXL size, will add to the allure of the event.
21.30–2.00 | More light! – installation by Stowarzyszenie Emaus and Maniek Furniture Cosignment Store | Workshops of Culture, Grodzka 7 – patio
The mysterious ambiance created by the combination of age-old furniture and countless lamps invites you to bask in the intimate glow of light. The installation’s unconventional character is emphasised by its location among old tenement houses, where a unique mosaic composition is created.
21.00–22.00 | The Street – an open rehearsal of a stage performance by the Workshops’ Theatre | The House of Words, Królewska 17
We will see an adaptation of a play by Roland Schimmelpfennig. The original is set on Greifswalder Straße, a street located in East Berlin .The story revolves around coincidences that may seem planned and only create the illusion of chaos. It delves into the lives of different, more or less successful people who cross paths every day on the same street. Above all, it would be about emotions if the characters could express and talk about them.
19.00–21.00 | Cultural Night of Theatre | Archidiakońska 7
Tonight, the theatre takes to the streets with two performances titled “Coexistence,” which explore the relationship between humans and nature. In turn, “The Ark” is an intimate, interactive family play based on the biblical story of the Flood. Situated close by is an art installation called “7 days”, which consist of a suitcase that evokes different associations for everyone. It could represent a journey, memories, or even an adventure.
19.00–2.00 | Night Parquet | Lubartowska
Experience the vibrant beat of the city! All dance enthusiasts are invited to a one-of-a-kind dance event. How do you want to spend your evening: with a DJ or maybe at the dance party “Folk meets Jazz” with Jazz Quintet? It’s up to you! Additionally, you can explore “RETRO-SPECTIONS,” a collection of costume photography by Paweł Adamiec, and the installation “The four seasons of the spider’s web.” Don’t miss the chance to participate in the performance “Yayoi Kusama in Lublin / Stick the dots.”

The narrowest street in Lublin is set to undergo another transformation. Visitors can expect to find cuddly cacti that can be caressed and an art installation named “Greeup city,” which serves as a reminder that nature can be present anywhere and anytime. Arachne’s spider webs and “The Enchanted Creatures of Lublin,” made of ceramics, will also be on display. At Rybny Square, visitors can admire statues of Slavic mythology gods (“The Roots of futurepast”) and “The Glass Garden” – botanical-inspired art on glass. Meanwhile, in the Hartwig Alley you can’t miss “The Next Bite” – a mural created by Marcin Wrzal.

A jury has chosen Lublin to showcase to Europe the values that matter to young people, to demonstrate their activities, and to focus their efforts on youth.
