Programme 2025 available
Just over six weeks remain until this year’s edition of Night of Culture. For the 19th time, Lublin will undergo an extraordinary transformation, becoming a space filled with light installations, performances, concerts, and artistic happenings. On the night of 7/8 June, art will once again appear in places where we would never expect to find it. The majority of this year’s programme is already available on our website.
—Once again, for one magical night, Lublin will transform into a fairytale city, alive with astonishing installations and unique events. As always, artists have crafted a rich Night of Culture program, offering a fresh perspective on our city. This year’s festival theme perfectly aligns with Lublin’s European Capital of Culture 2029 bid, especially the core concept of RE:UNION, which focuses on intensifying and repairing human connections and reuniting what has been broken. I warmly invite everyone to take part in the planned attractions and discover Lublin’s magical side,” says Beata Stepaniuk-Kuśmierzak, Deputy Mayor of Lublin for Culture, Sport and Participation.
For years, Night of Culture has inspired both newcomers and long-time residents to rediscover Lublin. The programme includes projects selected through an open call as well as festival productions created by Workshops of Culture.
The theme for this year’s edition is Interplays. Because relations are more than meetings – they are interactions that shape how we experience spaces and one another. A person’s relationship with a city is formed through everyday gestures: a glance at a building’s facade, a step on a cobbled street, a moment of stillness next to a stranger at a red light. Relationships are subtle interactions that connect us to places and, through them, to others. Night of Culture is the moment when these connections explode with intensity – they intertwine, shift, and come alive anew, explains Joanna Wawiórka-Kamieniecka, director of Night of Culture.
This year’s visual identity was once again designed by Iga Pałka. It draws inspiration from the natural relationship between nocturnal insects and light.
Moonlight allows insects to maintain a steady course. When they encounter artificial light, they become confused and lose their way, which is why we often see them circling bulbs. Evolution moves more slowly than technology, which is why insects are so vulnerable to artificial light. Contrary to popular belief, they don’t fly towards it – they are disoriented. Aside from the undeniable beauty of the nocturnal insect world, this phenomenon highlights the complexity of interrelations and reminds us that appearances can be deceiving.
As always, participants will move from one light to the next, with luminous art guiding them through Lublin and transforming familiar paths. The installation “In Between” will remind us of the importance of meeting one another, telling a story of how we need others to truly see ourselves. Light also returns in the refreshed and even more stunning version of Jarosław Koziara’s “Flowers of Evil” – a metaphor of nature: sensual, predatory, and powerful, capable of seducing or warning. This piece reminds us that nature requires respect and sensitivity. Nature will also inspire the “Crown of leaves” installation, which offers a moment of reflection on the power of reconnecting with the natural world.
Emerging Polish rappers
The Rap Stage has become a staple of Night of Culture. Like last year, it will be set up at the sports field behind the Vetter School Complex (Żmigród 10). The night kicks off with young rappers – winners of a competition run by Workshops of Culture. For many of them, this will be their first performance in front of such a large audience. The line-up includes Szerry, Julox, Aszur, MZM, Bambus, and Jan Maciąg. They will perform original material. Guest performer Wlazix, a finalist from the two previous editions, will also appear. During the concert, awards will be given by jury members Łona, Junior Stress, Wiśnia Bakajoko, and Zetena.
Later in the evening, JoBee Project, Wiśnia Bakajoko, and headliner O.S.T.R. will take the stage. The finale will feature a live act/set by producer Zetena and beatmaker/DJ Cut-ahead of the SNR Crew, performing instrumental versions of known tracks and fresh beats enhanced with scratches and cuts. Expect a bold boom bap and rich old-school sound.
Last year, many visitors were surprised by Jarosław Koziara’s monochromatic “Heroines.” This year, the artist takes a turn in the opposite direction with “Death Is Not the End…,” featuring dark sculptural forms resembling a local mushroom species emerging from tenement windows. Koziara’s students will also showcase unique metal creations, such as the striking “Fern Flowers.”
This year’s open call participants have beautifully interpreted the theme of Interplays. Patrycja Domin’s “On the verge of touch” features two lace-like hands suspended in the alcove of an old wall, trying to touch. It symbolizes both visible and invisible boundaries and reminds us that closeness is often just an arm’s length away.
The theatre piece “School Sins” explores the problems of high school students from an adult perspective – first crushes, sensuality, identity, family issues, and personal struggles.
“Lublin in passing” is an unusual walking tour led by Magdalena Łuczyn. Starting at the Lublin train station, it highlights architectural details, the changing landscape of the Kośminek district, and ends at the former Flugplatz in Bronowice. Along the way, participants will explore murals, local fauna, and forgotten corners of the city.
Once again, the everyday will slip out of definition. Comic-style speech bubbles will pop up across the Old Town streets – perfect for playful photos.
This year’s Night of Culture will also feature LEGO scenes inspired by Lublin legends, created by Michał Chmielowski. Meanwhile, the square near Po Farze will be adorned with giant soft LEGO bricks in colours drawn from this year’s visual identity: yellow (joy, energy), pink (love), and blue (freedom, creativity).
As tradition dictates, Night of Culture will again visit Perła Brewery ar Bernardyńska st. The programme includes installations and exhibitions focused on the fleeting beauty of nature (“Different People – One Passion”) and reflections on our times (“Our Era”). Kino Perła will screen two films: Wim Wenders’ “Wings of Desire” and the Polish cult horror “Wilczyca” (She-Wolf).
Visitors can also tour the undergrounds and historic brewhouse, and then relax in the chillout zone.
