The Night of Culture in the world of bedtime cartoons: The Smurfs
During this year’s Night of Culture (June 6/7, Old Town, Lublin), the city will transform for a few magical hours into a true fairy-tale land. And what if the Smurfs were among its guests? Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Greedy or Grouchy would easily find something in the program for themselves — from concerts and performances to talks about witches and workshops on baking cebularz. Here are our suggestions for where the most famous blue characters from the iconic cartoon might be spotted that night.
Library, sports, and food
“Hey kids, if you’d like to see the Smurf village…” Almost everyone knows this iconic song and its melody. So where will the Smurfs go on June 6?
Papa Smurf (the responsible leader in the red hat) will begin this extraordinary evening with a visit to the Information Point at Łokietka Square, chatting with our volunteers to check their morale. He will probably spend the night at Mr. Hieronim’s library, where, besides wise books, he will also discover plenty of other attractions.
Brainy Smurf (the know-it-all Smurf with glasses) has a plan for every minute of the Night of Culture. He will certainly try to convince everyone that we can shape the future of Lublin ourselves, so he will gladly attend the discussion titled Our City, Our Choice?
Hefty Smurf (the strongest Smurf, recognizable by the heart tattoo on his arm, he likes all sports) is getting ready for the performance Chasing the White Rabbit at Litewski Square, inspired by Alice in Wonderland and performed by roller skaters. Afterwards, he will rush to the Old Theatre to watch an aerial dance performance.
Greedy Smurf (a great lover of baked goods, always carrying cake in his hand) will not be able to resist visiting the Factory of Flavors and Stories, where he will have the chance to bake a fish-shaped cebularz – Cebularz onion loaf or Fish? He will also happily join the walk What can I get you? Lublin’s PRL-Era restaurants and cafés.
Literary meetings and music
Clumsy Smurf (awkward, but very friendly and loyal) will surely be searching for art installations and events on Sunday morning. Don’t be like Clumsy — remember that the Night of Culture lasts seven magical hours and ends at 2:00 a.m. on the night from Saturday to Sunday.
Smurfette (fascinated by magic and mysteries) will head to the Między Słowami bookstore café for a literary meeting devoted to the witches’ sabbath of Lublin.
Harmony Smurf (who considers himself a musician, although he plays terribly out of tune on his trumpet) will not move an inch from the Rock Stage at Olejny Square.
Art installations, workshops, and poetry
Sleepy Smurf (always drowsy and hard to wake up) will, if he manages to get up in time, direct his little blue feet toward A Bedtime story for all ages at MDK no. 2 on Bernardyńska Street. By the end of the evening, he will probably doze off at Soft Goodnight near the Information Point.
Painter Smurf (an artist with a French accent, always carrying a paintbrush) will spend time at the Society of Friends of Fine Arts (TPSP) in Lublin, intrigued by the exhibition and art workshops.
Vanity Smurf (extremely vain) loves admiring his reflection in the mirror. During the Night of Culture, he will find it at the patio on 7 Grodzka Street in the installation Dreams – fragments of the subconscious. He will definitely take countless selfies as well.
Poet Smurf (a sensitive writer of poems) cannot wait for the meeting with Piotr Szreniawski, also a poet, who every year hands out booklets of his poetry during the Night of Culture. Poet Smurf will probably also visit the Theatre Corner at the Centre for Culture and reflect during the poetic song concert I must enter your life.
Grouchy Smurf (the Smurf who dislikes everything, famous for saying “I hate…”) will arrive reluctantly, looking for flaws in everything, and later return to his mushroom house to write sarcastic comments until dawn.
And what will happen when yet another gate to the world of imagination opens? We will find out very soon. And you — which fairy tale or bedtime story world would you like to open the gate to on June 6?
About Night of Culture
Night of Culture consists of hundreds of free artistic events scattered across Lublin’s public spaces. There are thousands of smiling people wandering through the city streets in search of unforgettable experiences. It’s the only night of the year when the impossible becomes possible. For seven hours, the city is packed with concerts, light installations, and spectacles that defy definition. You can smell the gateways, stroke “furry” walls, and peek through keyholes into fantastic worlds.
For the 20th time, we invite you on this endemic spacerum profanum through Lublin’s Old Town. It’s going to be a good night.
